New Updates

I’ve fallen behind on my blogging, as my husband reminds me daily, so this is me trying to get back in the swing of things with a general update. We got a couch about three weeks ago. It’s actually a loveseat. Have I mentioned how terrible the furniture selection is here? It’s really awful– high prices for poor quality. We’re talking $700 for a couch stuffed with cheapo egg-crate foam. And the styles are terrible! Puerto Rico has some weird fascination with white- and cream-colored laminated neo-Waterfall bedroom suites and bright white pleather couches. In light...

Home Brew!

This post will be very geeky. Those who are not interested in the art of beer brewing, you have been warned. I’ve been a big fan of home brewing for quite a while now. How do you solve a 50% sales tax evasion problem the Puerto Rican way? Print free lottery tickets on the sales receipts of course! After the IVU (Impuesto sobre Ventas y Uso) sales tax was passed in 2006, the Treasury Dept. estimated that only about 50% of sales were being reported (est. $800 million per year). It seemed that many Puerto Ricans would rather just deal in cash than have the government get all up in their britches. Naomi and I actually had a small shop owner tell us straight up that if we paid with cash he wouldn’t charge us sales tax. It was also suspected that many...

Really. Big. Waves.

There’s been a series of really big ocean swells coming in over the last week. It’s been really cool to watch things pick up and see all the surfers get excited. The peaks in waves were supposed to be on Thursday, Saturday and Monday/Tuesday. I made it out with my surf buddy Tony on Friday and had a blast! A couple of days of getting up at dawn for surfing, paddling my ass off, and then working all day had me a bit worn down so I skipped out of surfing on Saturday. That was probably a good idea as even with the extra rest I was incredibly dizzy all weekend. No ear pain, though, so...
